SHEFFIELD

Sheffield Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Sheffield charges vans, taxis, lorries, buses and coaches that miss the emissions standard, but never a private car. Note that the inner ring road is inside the zone, not a way round it. Charging began on 27 February 2023.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

No. Sheffield is a Class C zone, so private cars are not charged — unless the car is a taxi or private hire vehicle.

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. The national minimum standards: Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs, and Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol for taxis, private hire vehicles and vans.

Not sure which side of the line your vehicle falls? Check the registration here and we will show every zone at once, or use the government's own checker.

Where and when it applies

The inner ring road and every road inside it. The ring road itself is in the zone, deliberately, so there is no free route round the edge.

Hours: 24 hours a day, midnight to midnight, seven days a week. The council states plainly that there are no grace periods around midnight.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: Six days before you travel, on the day itself, or six days after.

Penalty: £120 plus the daily charge, reduced to £60 plus the charge if you pay within 14 days of issue.

Exemptions and discounts

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Do cars pay in Sheffield's Clean Air Zone?

No. Sheffield is a Class C zone, so private cars and motorcycles are not charged. A car licensed as a taxi or private hire vehicle is charged £10 a day if it misses the standard.

Is the Sheffield inner ring road inside the Clean Air Zone?

Yes. The zone covers the inner ring road and all roads inside it, so unlike Birmingham there is no free ring-road route around the zone.

How much is the Sheffield Clean Air Zone charge?

£10 a day for a non-compliant van, taxi or private hire vehicle, and £50 for a bus, coach or HGV. Large motorhomes can apply to pay £10 rather than £50.
