BIRMINGHAM

Birmingham Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Birmingham is one of only two English zones that charge private cars. If your car does not meet the emissions standard, driving inside the A4540 Middleway costs £8 a day. It has run since 1 June 2021.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

Yes — £8 a day, if the car does not meet the emissions standard. Birmingham is a Class D zone.

VehicleChargeNotes
Cars £8 a day
Vans and LGVs £8 a day
Taxis and private hire vehicles £8 a day
Motorcycles and mopeds Not charged Not charged
Coaches and buses £50 a day
HGVs £50 a day
Minibuses Not published Birmingham does not publish a minibus rate — check your registration

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. Not charged if the vehicle is a Euro 6 diesel or better, a Euro 4 petrol or better, Euro 6 gas, or fully electric. A hybrid is judged on its petrol or diesel engine.

Not sure which side of the line your vehicle falls? Check the registration here and we will show every zone at once, or use the government's own checker.

Where and when it applies

The city centre inside the A4540 Middleway — but not the Middleway itself, which you can drive round without paying. There are no barriers or toll booths; cameras read registrations at the boundary.

Hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The charge runs midnight to 11:59pm, not 24 hours from when you enter, so crossing midnight costs two days.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: A 13-day window: up to 6 days before your journey, on the day itself, or up to 6 days after, with a deadline of 11:59pm on the sixth day.

Penalty: £120, reduced to £60 if paid within 14 days of the date of service. After 28 days a Charge Certificate raises it by 50% to £180.

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Do cars pay in Birmingham's Clean Air Zone?

Yes, if they do not meet the emissions standard: £8 a day. Birmingham is a Class D zone, which is the only class that charges private cars. A Euro 6 diesel, a Euro 4 or newer petrol, or an electric car pays nothing.

Can I drive round the Birmingham Clean Air Zone?

Yes. The zone is the area inside the A4540 Middleway, and the Middleway itself is outside it, so the ring road is a free through-route.

How much is the Birmingham Clean Air Zone fine?

£120, halved to £60 if you pay within 14 days, rising to £180 if you ignore it for 28 days. The £8 daily charge is still owed on top.

Stop having to remember any of this

CAZ Tracker watches for the moment you cross into a zone and reminds you, with a link straight to the official payment page. It is a reminder, not a guarantee — read when it won't alert you before relying on it.
