GLASGOW LEZ

Glasgow City Centre Low Emission Zone: what you pay and how

Glasgow is not a charging zone. If your vehicle does not meet the standard you may not drive into the city centre at all — there is no daily charge to pay, only a penalty if you enter. Enforcement began on 1 June 2023.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

Cars are covered, but not by a charge: a non-compliant car entering the zone gets a penalty. You cannot pay in advance.

VehicleChargeNotes
Cars, vans, buses, coaches and HGVs Not charged No charge exists — non-compliant vehicles are banned
Motorbikes and mopeds Not charged Outside the scheme entirely

There is no charge to pay here. This is a ban, not a charging zone: a non-compliant vehicle cannot buy its way in, and entering means a penalty.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. Euro 4 for petrol cars and vans, Euro 6 for diesel cars and vans, Euro VI for diesel buses, coaches and HGVs. Fully electric vehicles are unrestricted.

Where and when it applies

The city centre bounded by the M8 to the north and west, the River Clyde to the south, and Saltmarket and High Street to the east. The M8 itself is outside the zone.

Hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including Christmas Day and public holidays.

Penalties

Entering the zone: There is no payment window, because there is nothing to pay. The only lawful ways in are a compliant vehicle or a registered exemption.

Penalty: £60, reduced to £30 if paid within 14 days. It then doubles on each further detection of the same vehicle within 90 days — £120, £240, £480 — capped at £480 for a car or van and £960 for a bus, coach or HGV. Ninety clear days resets it to £60.

Exemptions and discounts

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Can I pay to drive into Glasgow's Low Emission Zone?

No. Unlike an English Clean Air Zone there is no daily charge, and no way to pay in advance. A non-compliant vehicle entering the zone receives a penalty, so the only options are a compliant vehicle, a registered exemption, or going round.

What is the fine for Glasgow's Low Emission Zone?

£60, halved to £30 if paid within 14 days. It doubles for each repeat entry within 90 days, up to £480 for a car or van and £960 for a bus, coach or HGV, then resets after 90 clear days.

Does the Glasgow LEZ apply to motorbikes?

No. Motorbikes and mopeds are outside the scheme.
