NEWCASTLE & GATESHEAD

Newcastle and Gateshead Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Private cars are not charged in Newcastle and Gateshead, and that has not changed. Vans, taxis, minibuses, buses, coaches and lorries are, if they miss the emissions standard. Charging began in stages during 2023.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

No. This is a Class C zone, so privately owned cars are not charged.

VehicleChargeNotes
Private cars Not charged Not charged
Motorcycles Not charged Not charged
Taxis and private hire vehicles £12.50 a day Or a £50 permit for 7 consecutive days
Vans and LGVs £12.50 a day
Minibuses £12.50 a day
Buses and coaches £50 a day
HGVs £50 a day

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. The national minimum standards apply: Euro VI for buses, coaches and HGVs, and Euro 6 diesel or Euro 4 petrol for vans, minibuses, taxis and private hire vehicles.

Where and when it applies

Most of Newcastle city centre, plus the routes over the Tyne, Swing, High Level and Redheugh bridges. There are 38 cameras and signs on the approaches — check the official map before assuming a bridge route avoids the zone.

Hours: 24 hours a day. A charging day runs midnight to midnight, so entering before midnight and leaving afterwards means two charges.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: Up to 6 days before you drive in the zone, on the day itself, or by 11:59pm on the sixth day after.

Penalty: £120, reduced to £60 if you pay within 14 days, plus the original daily charge.

Exemptions and discounts

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.
