PORTSMOUTH

Portsmouth Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Portsmouth charges the least of any English zone. Cars, vans and minibuses are not charged at all, whatever their emissions — only taxis, private hire vehicles, buses, coaches and lorries pay. It has run since 29 November 2021.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

No. Portsmouth is Class B, so cars are not charged — and neither are vans or minibuses.

VehicleChargeNotes
Private cars Not charged Not charged
Vans and LGVs Not charged Not charged
Minibuses Not charged Not charged — outside Class B
Motorcycles Not charged Not charged
Taxis and private hire vehicles £10 a day
Buses and coaches £50 a day
HGVs, including larger motorhomes taxed as private HGVs £50 a day

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. A charge applies to diesels that miss Euro 6, meaning Euro 5 or older, and petrol vehicles that miss Euro 4, meaning Euro 3 or older.

Where and when it applies

About 3 square kilometres in the south west of Portsea Island. The council publishes a postcode list and boundary plans rather than a description by road, so check those.

Hours: GOV.UK states that English zones operate 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Portsmouth's own pages do not state hours.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: Up to 6 days before entering the zone and up to 6 days after. A refund needs applying for by 6pm the day before the journey, and £3 is deducted as an administration fee.

Penalty: £120 in addition to the daily charge, reduced by half to £60 if you pay within 14 days of issue.

Exemptions and discounts

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Do cars or vans pay in Portsmouth's Clean Air Zone?

How much is the Portsmouth Clean Air Zone charge?

£10 a day for a non-compliant taxi or private hire vehicle, and £50 a day for a non-compliant bus, coach or HGV, including larger motorhomes taxed as private HGVs.

Is Portsmouth's zone being extended to cars?

The council states there are currently no plans to extend the zone, and any change would be a decision for central government.

Stop having to remember any of this

CAZ Tracker watches for the moment you cross into a zone and reminds you, with a link straight to the official payment page. It is a reminder, not a guarantee — read when it won't alert you before relying on it.
