BATH

Bath's Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Bath charges vans, taxis, minibuses, coaches and lorries that do not meet the emissions standard — but never a private car, however old it is. It has run since 15 March 2021.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

No. Bath is a Class C zone, so private cars are not charged, even when used for work.

VehicleChargeNotes
Cars (including SUVs, four-by-fours, campervans taxed as cars) Not charged Not charged
Motorcycles Not charged Not charged
Vans, LGVs and pick-ups (up to 3.5t) £9 a day
Taxis and private hire vehicles £9 a day
Minibuses £9 a day
HGVs, lorries £100 a day
Buses and coaches £100 a day
Private HGVs — horseboxes, large motorhomes £100 a day £9 if registered with the council

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. Charges apply to Euro 1–5 diesel and Euro 1–3 petrol vehicles (and earlier). A Euro 6 diesel or a newer petrol vehicle is not charged. Electric vehicles are never charged.

Not sure which side of the line your vehicle falls? Check the registration here and we will show every zone at once, or use the government's own checker.

Where and when it applies

The zone covers Bath city centre. The council publishes a map and a registration checker — use those rather than judging by eye, because the boundary follows individual junctions rather than a single ring road.

Hours: Midnight to midnight, seven days a week, all year round. Drive in before midnight and out afterwards and that is two chargeable days.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: Up to 6 days before you drive in the zone, on the day itself, or within the following 6 days. There is no reminder, and Auto Pay is not available in Bath.

Penalty: £120, reduced to £60 if you pay within 14 days of the date of service. Ignore it for 28 days and a Charge Certificate raises it to £180, and the daily charge is still owed on top.

Exemptions and discounts

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Do cars pay in Bath's Clean Air Zone?

No. Bath is a Class C zone and private cars are never charged, no matter how old or how polluting, and even when used for work. Vans, taxis, minibuses, lorries, buses and coaches are charged if they do not meet the emissions standard.

How much is the Bath Clean Air Zone charge?

£9 a day for a non-compliant van, taxi, private hire vehicle or minibus, and £100 a day for a non-compliant HGV, bus or coach. Horseboxes and large motorhomes registered with the council pay £9 rather than £100.

How long do I have to pay the Bath charge?

From 6 days before your journey to 6 days after it. Miss that window and you get a £120 penalty, halved to £60 if you pay within 14 days.

Stop having to remember any of this

CAZ Tracker watches for the moment you cross into a zone and reminds you, with a link straight to the official payment page. It is a reminder, not a guarantee — read when it won't alert you before relying on it.
