Bristol's Clean Air Zone: what you pay and how

Bristol is the other English zone that charges private cars. A car that misses the emissions standard costs £9 a day in the central zone, which has run since 28 November 2022.

Checked against the operating authority's own published figures on 28 September 2026.

Does my vehicle have to pay?

Yes — £9 a day, petrol or diesel, if the car does not meet the emissions standard. Bristol is a Class D zone.

VehicleChargeNotes
Cars, petrol or diesel £9 a day
Vans and LGVs under 3.5t £9 a day
Taxis and private hire vehicles £9 a day
Motorcycles Not charged Not charged
HGVs over 3.5t £100 a day

We never take your payment. The charge is paid to the authority at the standard price — Pay on GOV.UK. CAZ Tracker only reminds you, and adds nothing to the price.

Charges only ever apply to vehicles that miss the emissions standard. No charge for Euro 4, 5 or 6 petrol vehicles, roughly 2006 onwards, or Euro 6 diesels, roughly the end of 2015 onwards. Electric and hydrogen vehicles are never charged, nor are vehicles with an approved retrofit.

Where and when it applies

A small zone over the central area where pollution is worst. The council describes it that way rather than by naming boundary roads, so check the official map or your postcode before assuming you are outside it.

Hours: 24 hours a day, midnight to midnight, seven days a week, all year round. One charge covers unlimited entries in a day, but crossing midnight costs two days.

Deadlines and penalties

Paying: Up to 6 days before you drive in the zone, on the day itself, or up to 6 days after.

Penalty: £120 plus the daily charge, reduced to £60 plus the charge if you pay within 14 days.

Exemptions are granted by the authority, not by us, and most need applying for before you travel.

Common questions

Do cars pay in Bristol's Clean Air Zone?

Yes, if they do not meet the emissions standard: £9 a day, petrol or diesel. Bristol and Birmingham are the only English zones that charge private cars. A petrol car from roughly 2006 onwards, or a diesel from the end of 2015 onwards, pays nothing.

How much is the Bristol Clean Air Zone charge?

£9 a day for a non-compliant car, van, taxi or private hire vehicle, and £100 a day for a non-compliant HGV, bus or coach. Motorcycles are not charged.

Is there help to replace a non-compliant vehicle in Bristol?

Yes. Bristol runs one of the larger support schemes: up to £1,500 towards a car, £4,500 for a van and £16,000 for an HGV or coach, for residents earning under £35,000 who have owned the vehicle for at least a year, and for small businesses.
